This small genre of wine cups were produced between 540 BC and 500 BC. Eyecups' defining feature is a pair of eyes painted on each side. They were used exclusively by aristocrats at drinking parties called symposia (singular 'symposium). I am studying the iconography on these cups for a Masters at The University of Melbourne. I will post thoughts and links on this blog and invite others to do likewise.

Eyecups
I'm addressing the question 'were eyecups art for art's sake'. If they were then that does not mean that the iconography had no meaning or that the meaning is of lesser quality or importance, maybe it enhances their importance.
